The East Midlands has emerged as the top region for tradespeople in the UK, according to a recent study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Drive Spark reported. The survey highlighted that tradespeople in this area experience less stress, work fewer hours, and have shorter commutes compared to their counterparts nationwide. This contrasts sharply with London, where more extended hours and commutes contribute to higher stress levels. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' study revealed significant regional differences in working conditions for tradespeople. In the East Midlands, 49% of van drivers reported no increase in working hours, unlike the 61% nationwide who experienced longer hours. Additionally, East Midlands workers average 9.03 hours daily, less than the UK's 9.25-hour average. Tradespeople in the East Midlands also enjoy shorter commutes, averaging 67.95 miles daily compared to London's 103.39 miles and the North West's 98.85 miles. This reduced travel distance potentially saves drivers up to 82.42 hours annually. Such factors contribute to lower stress levels among East Midlands workers. Stress levels vary significantly across regions, with only 30% of East Midlands tradespeople feeling overwhelmed weekly, compared to higher percentages elsewhere. In contrast, Northern Ireland reported a staggering 71% feeling overwhelmed at least once a week. The frequency of mental health-related job refusals also varied by region. Tradespeople in the East Midlands turned down fewer jobs due to mental health issues (2.84 days) compared to an average of 3.58 days across the UK. London and Wales reported higher figures at 4.05 and 5.75 days, respectively.
