Do established plasterers need NVQs to get Gold Cards?

Posted: Friday, April 26th, 2024

The abolition of 'grandfather rights' for Gold CSCS Cards has been rumbling on in the background for the last 18 months. But now many experienced spreads are left needing an NVQ to retain their card. Chris Frediani and Bradleigh (Bradders) Hancock speak with heritage plasterer Keith Langton, and fourth-generation plasterer Mark Hardman to understand what's going on with CSCS cards.

Keith was denied a gold card despite taking the test, passing it and paying for the card. He was informed that he can't be issued one as he doesn't have an NVQ even though he did an apprenticeship with City & Guilds.

"CSCS doesn't recognise City & Guilds all of a sudden. So for me to get a new gold card, I have to get an NVQ and pay £1,500," he reveals. "Why should I do an NVQ at my age? I'm 63!"

To get a gold card, Keith is being told to get an NVQ 6 certification which will take him three to four years, for which he doesn't have the time or money.

Mark was also denied a gold card a few years ago. He had to take a course even though he had a three-year Advanced Craft certification from City & Guilds. He paid £600 then. Now, he's been told that the course he did isn't covered and he needs to get an NVQ to get his CSCS card renewed, which is expiring this August.

Chris and Bradders also speak to Colin McCaughey, an educator in the trade, to get context on why this has happened.
