Chris Frediani and guests talk lime, clay, mono, and Venetian plaster

Posted: Friday, December 8th, 2023

Chris Frediani and Bradleigh (Bradders) Hancock on this week's Plastering Show ask fellow plasters about what's in their mix - they're joined by Ben Kerslake to discuss lime and clay mixes and Paul Robbins to debate mono and micro-cement.

Carrington Lime's Ben Kerslake uses a "broad spectrum" of materials with a focus on natural and less processed such as lime and clay. He shares that clay is more breathable, sustainable for the environment, and helps with dampness.

"When clay's bone dry, like how it should be on our walls, it's absorbent. When we have relative humidity, it gets damp inside our buildings, the plaster can absorb that and allow it to move, escape or store it until humidity goes down again," he reveals.

Paul Robbins, who takes on plastering, rendering, mono and micro-cement work, as well as Venetian plastering jobs, says his mix usually depends on the job.

The mix he finds most challenging to work with is mono-couche as it jams the machine. He also discussed how materials have evolved since he's been on the tools.
