Mark Hall and Carl Ladd return to The Heating & Plumbing Show to share more details about their master and apprentice relationship.
Carl has had to learn a whole new skillset after switching trades from carpentry to heating and plumbing. "It's not just a boiler - there's so much to it. Whether it's a new build or an older property, the trade requires a lot of skills and knowledge. It's been a great learning curve," he adds.
Former chippie Carl is older than Mark and one would think this affects their dynamic as apprentice and master respectively. But it doesn't, says Mark. "It's not an age thing, it's all about experience."
Carl has worked with Mark for the past eight months. "I clearly respect the hierarchy. When I do get things wrong, even though I'm older, he's approachable," Carl concludes.
Carl plans to continue working on the gas and heating side of the trade. "In the future, I’ll get into renewables, but for now I want to focus on building my skills in gas and get all my qualifications," he adds.
As a veteran, Mark shares some of the aspects of the trade he avoids. "Being quite well established in our field, we concentrate on gas and heating and try not to work with builders."
Having a mature apprentice, is a huge benefit says Carl. "He's good at what he does, we've got a good relationship going where we're honest with each other."
The duo also shared their experience with van break-ins and tool thefts. "I've caught two guys lifting tools off my van," says Mark.
