Band of Builders is expecting a busy festive period for its recently launched mental health text service. The construction charity launched the support service in October as part of its annual ‘Big Brew’ campaign that encouraged tradespeople to open up about anxiety, stress and other mental health issues. “Band of Builders is making a simple appeal this Christmas to everyone involved in the construction industry to ask for help if they are suffering with mental health issues,” said Peter Cape, the Big Brew lead at Band of Builders. “We’re asking scaffolders, roofers, electricians, builders and everyone else in construction, or their families, who are concerned about their mental health to take that all-important first step and text BOB to 85258,” he added. Tradespeople, contractors and their families can text BOB to 85258 anytime to get access to support. The support team are trained to deal with any number of mental health problems, including abuse, addiction, anger issues, anxiety, bullying, loneliness, personality disorders, self harm, work-related stress, trauma, personality disorders and even suicidal thoughts. Recently released government figures indicate that 507 people employed in the construction industry committed suicide in 2021, up from the previous year. The suicide rate of those in the building trade is nearly four times the national industry average.
