Tradespeople are being urged to check they’re fully insured against claims from customers and the public, after the volume of public liability claims leapt by 10% in the last year.

According to Quotezone.co.uk, there were nearly 59,000 liability claims registered with the Compensation Recovery Unit in 2023/24.

The amount of money recovered via liability claims surged by 33%, to nearly £8 million during the same time period.

Housing Minister, Matthew Pennycook expressed concerns at the Labour Party Conference that the country is over-reliant on a small number of volume builders, and the market must diversify.

Over the last 40 years, the percentage of new homes delivered by smaller builders has plummeted from 40% to just 10%.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said he was delighted to hear the minister acknowledge the crucial role SME builders have in delivering the government’s plan to build 1.5 million homes in the next 5 years.

The family of a former bricklayer from county Armagh has launched a GoFundMe page to fund home improvements that will help their father move around the family home.

Raymond ‘Boots’ Callaghan was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2019, which was caused by breathing in cement dust during his 43-year career onsite.

The initial plan is to fit a chairlift so Boots will be able to move off the sofa and make it to his bedroom each night.
