AUDIO NEWS: Tradespeople targeted in phishing scam and bricklayers wanted to build war memorial

Posted: Wednesday, August 14th, 2024

UK tradespeople are being targeted by a sophisticated phishing scam offering free tools.

Emails purporting to come from Screwfix, offer readers the chance to win the tools if they complete a quick survey. However, the emails are designed to defraud individuals of their private and financial details.

The email uses convincing Screwfix branding and creates a false sense of urgency by claiming the offer expires on the same day.

War veterans are appealing for bricklayers in the Bristol area to help build a memorial to military personnel who lost their lives in the last 70 years.

The group has planning permission for the memorial at Severn Beach, near Bristol and donated materials but work hasn’t started due to the lack of skilled tradespeople.

Project manager, Roger Moseley, who has been working on the project for the last 3 years told the BBC, “the quicker we get a bricklayer in, the quicker the monument will be completed.”

Toolstation has collaborated with Macmillan Cancer Support for an ad campaign to raise awareness about the risk of skin cancer.

Research supporting the ad campaign suggests nearly a quarter of tradespeople never wear sunscreen when on the job, despite regularly wearing it when on holiday.

Of those that die of skin cancer in the UK each year, 44% of them worked in the construction sector.
