AUDIO NEWS: Tradesmen turns whistleblower on developer and police hand out tool marking kits

Posted: Wednesday, May 21st, 2025

A tradesperson has turned whistle blower on a local developer after being exposed to asbestos on site.

The tradie, who remained anonymous, exposed dangerous working conditions and corner-cutting by Stephens and Stephens.

The tradesman was employed by Paul Stephens to pull down a hotel in Newquay during the summer of 2020, but when working on site they were expected to remove thick asbestos sheets and tiles without any PPE.

Stephens was convicted in court over the illegal working conditions.

The anonymous tradesman told his local paper that the “hardest thing” was not knowing whether he’s been poisoned with asbestos.

Sussex Police has been distributing DNA tool marking kits to tradespeople in the South East.

Around 500 kits were funded by the police and Checkatrade.

Katy Bourne, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner said that the kits made tools traceable and harder to re-sell.

The kits use an invisible gel which is used to mark tools and machinery. It can then be identified with ultraviolent light and specialist microscopes.

This year’s Women Installers Together conference will be held in Camden at the start of July.

The event organised by Stopcocks Women Plumbers will feature a keynote from former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq, and a speech from event founder, Hattie Hasan.

Hasan started the event in 2017 to combat the isolation felt by many women working in the trades.
