Thieves helped themselves to £3.5 billion worth of equipment from vans last year – that’s according to research from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The van maker estimated that tool theft had increased by a third between 2020 and 2022. However, the cost of tool theft could have been much higher, with nearly 48% of tradespeople admitting to keeping over £2,000 worth of tools in their vehicle overnight. The research, based on freedom of information requests to the Police, found that London had the most incidents of tool theft, with 6,000 reported cases in 2022. --- Recent changes to add skilled construction trades to the shortage occupation list are unlikely to alleviate the industry’s skills crisis, claims a HR legal specialist.
