AUDIO NEWS: Spring budget won't help skills shortage and developers drop eco-commitments

Posted: Monday, May 26th, 2025

Tradespeople feel that the recent spring budget will worsen the skills shortage – that’s according to a survey from On The Tools.

Half of the tradespeople surveyed felt they didn’t have enough colleagues to support them.

Although 18% of respondents claimed they were optimistic about the budget’s ability to tackle industry issues, the survey also highlighted a negative perception around recent announcements.

Many tradespeople did not see how top-level announcements could help their day-to-day work.

CEO and co-founder of On the Tools, Lee Wilcox said that although the budget took some welcome steps, the survey highlights that many tradespeople “still await real change”.

Academics examined 42 developments, covering 6,000 homes and found that just 53% of the ecological features promised as part of planning permission were present.

When researchers excluded newly planted trees, the figure fell to just 34%.

The study highlighted the lack of monitoring and enforcement from local planning authorities.
