AUDIO NEWS: Reliability is a tradeperson's top attribute and house building planning approvals plummet

Posted: Tuesday, September 12th, 2023

Reliability and trustworthiness are the best attributes of a tradesperson - that’s according to a poll of 2,000 consumers.

Qualifications or accreditation with an industry body only came third on the survey commissioned by Gas Safe Register.

The study also claimed that 75% of respondents would only ever hire a tradesperson based on a recommendation.

Spokesperson Rob Denman said: “there’s the famous saying ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’ and that seems to be borne out of these results.”

Planning approvals for new houses have fallen by 20% in the last year, according to a report in the Telegraph.

Shrinking demand, the end of the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme and ‘nimby’ councils blocking planning applications are being blamed for a drop in planning approvals.

Approvals are at their lowest level since records began in 2006.

Neil Jefferson, managing director of the Home Builders Federation said government policies have become “increasingly anti-development and anti-business”.

And finally, a level 3 electrical apprentice who was inspired to enter the trade by his granddad is now inspiring his now retired relative, with this work in renewables.

Caethan Griffin, currently works with social landlord, Melin Homes which allows him to work on net zero projects.

Griffin, who describes his experience in the trade so far as “brilliant”, says he wants to specialise in solar panels of EV chargers when he qualifies.
