AUDIO NEWS: Plumbers report increase in late payments and new home registrations leap by 40%

Posted: Monday, November 18th, 2024

Payment delays, rising costs and the persistent shortage of skilled workers are putting increasing strain on the heating and plumbing sector in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In research from The Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation released last week, 82% of companies reported payment delays from contractors and small builders.

Nearly 60% of the trade association’s members also said there was an increase in non-payment incidents over the last quarter.

Despite payment problems, member companies were overwhelmingly optimistic about the future, with 84% saying they expected steady or growing order volumes in 2025.

New home registrations leapt by 40% year-on-year in the third quarter — that’s according to data released by the National House Building Council (NHBC).

New home registrations are still significantly below previous years, but are holding steady for the year, said Steve Wood, chief executive of the home warranty provider.

Wood added that there were signs of increased activity on site and an “emerging mood of cautious optimism among housebuilders”.
