AUDIO NEWS: Only a third of workers feel safe on site and seven people convicted for construction tax scam

Only a third of European construction workers feel completely safe on site, claims a report from tool maker, Milwaukee.

The survey of over 3,000 construction professionals, from 14 countries, found a consistent pattern of poor working practices, unmitigated risk and use of low-quality equipment on site.

Over half of the survey respondents said they’d witnessed between 1-and-5 site accidents in their careers.

Working at height and objects falling from height were the two most common ‘major incidents’, followed by slips and trips and use of faulty tools and equipment.

Nearly 50% of workers also admitted to modifying gear they perceived to be inadequate to help them do their job.

Seven fraudsters have been convicted for their part in a £22 million construction tax scam.

The defendants set up bogus payroll companies, which diverted VAT and Construction Industry Scheme contributions into private accounts, rather than to HMRC.

The ringleaders, Daniel Newton and Philip Bailey who were responsible for establishing and maintaining the scam were given sentences ranging from nine to six years in jail.
