AUDIO NEWS: Number of SME builders in Scotland plummets and Installer Show opens today....

Posted: Monday, June 23rd, 2025

The number of small and medium sized builders in Scotland has dropped to its lowest level in 20 years — that’s according to a report from Homes for Scotland.

In a HFS survey nine out of 10 builders blamed red tape and rising costs for the tough business environment.

The report claimed that regulations brought in since 2021 are responsible for in excess of £20,000 of additional costs on each new home.

Delays in planning were also blamed for blocking progress and preventing new homes being delivered.

Sustainable building practices will top the agenda at this year’s Installer Show, which starts today at the NEC in Birmingham.

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has built a two-storey house at the centre of the exhibition, where it will spotlight sustainable innovation.

UKGBC is hosting a workshop where it intends to explore the best way to overcome barriers to sustainable transformation in the industry.

A man who abused a builder working on a hotel restoration project in County Wicklow has been convicted and fined.

36-year-old Philip Lifely was found guilty after video footage uploaded to social media showed him swearing at the builder and ordering him to pack up his tools and leave the site.

Lifely was part of a protest that had gathered at the hotel in the mistaken belief that it was being renovated to house asylum seekers.
