AUDIO NEWS: MPs back call for builder licensing scheme and plumbers in Scotland at breaking point

Posted: Saturday, May 24th, 2025

A committee of MPs has backed calls for a national licensing scheme for builders.

The select committee for Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) released a report last week claiming that homeowners weren’t spending on home improvements because they couldn’t find trusted contractors to carry out the work.

The MPs feel a national registration scheme, as lobbied for by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) could be the answer.

The FMB outlined its plan for a licensing model last week at an event in parliament.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said the MPs support underpinned its call for mandatory licensing for all domestic building companies.

The plumbing and heating industry in Scotland is at breaking point, due to the shortage of skilled engineers.

Nearly 70% of plumbing and heating businesses north of the border claim they’re unable to recruit skilled staff.

Over three quarters also said they were unlikely to hire an apprentice in the next six months.

The NFRC Charitable Trust has launched a survey to gather feedback from those in the roofing and cladding industry.

The charity helps those who are working or have worked in the roofing and cladding sector.

Historically it has helped with education, upskilling and hardship support.

It hopes the survey responses will guide its future direction.
