AUDIO NEWS: London Police raid car boot sale and 25% of tradespeople lose work due to van breakdowns

The Met Police seized half a million pounds of suspected stolen tools after it raided the Warren Farm Bonzer Sale in East London.

Local officers made six arrests and recovered 1,500 tools. A further 159 tools were found during another search at a property in Hackney.

The raid on the Warren Farm market followed last month’s operation against a car boot sale in Rainham that recovered £50,000 worth of stolen tools.

Inspector Mark Connolly, from the Met Police pledged to “continue to take action against those who make the lives of Londoners a misery through this type of offending.”

Modern slavery and unethical business practices are still common in the UK and Irish building industry – that’s according to a report from Achilles.

The report, based on nearly 10,000 interviews, with construction workers representing over 100 nationalities, identified a host of issues including recruitment fees charged to workers, unexplained wage deductions and restricted access to mobile phones

More than a quarter of tradespeople have had to cancel jobs because their van is off the road, and they can’t get to work.

The poll of over 500 tradespeople by Tempcover found that around 40% had to borrow a vehicle from friends or family just to keep working.

The report also highlighted the impact of van break-ins, with 80% of respondents saying they had been a victim.
