AUDIO NEWS: Labour shuts down changes to anti tool theft bill and industry needs another 239,000 workers

Posted: Tuesday, June 24th, 2025

Labour MPs blocked several proposed amendments to its anti-tool theft legislation last week.

Conservatives tried to introduce changes to the Theft of Tools of Trade (Sentencing) Bill, including fines to reflect the cost of replacing tools and the loss of work, and a ban on the sale of stolen kit at car boot sales.

Tory MP, and shadow minister for policing and crime, Matt Vickers told The Daily Express, that Labour had “shamefully voted down” our plans to crack down on tool theft.”

The bill, originally introduced by Labour MP, Amanda Martin, will have its second reading in parliament next month.
