AUDIO NEWS: House building slumps hits brickies and angry carpenter attacks ULEZ camera

Posted: Monday, November 27th, 2023

The house building slump hit bricklayers last month – that’s according to data from construction payroll firm, Hudson Contract.

October’s figures show a 11% drop in the number of payments made to tradespeople from brickwork contractors, compared to the same time last year.

Contractors are paying more for experienced bricklayers, but younger brickies are being let go, claims MS, of Hudson Contract, Ian Anfield.

“We saw the same thing during the financial crisis of 2008, it’s like history repeating itself. If contractors let people go and material suppliers cut back on production, it will take a long time for the industry to recover,” warned Anfield.

An angry carpenter vandalised a ULEZ camera in London because he felt “penalised” over the daily £12.5 charge.

60-year-old, Stephen Nunn was caught by police spraying a camera in Bromley, last year.

Nunn’s barrister said the offence was the culmination of two or three years of financial hardship.

Earlier this month the police said there were nearly 1,000 crimes relating to cameras in the capital.

A carpenter from Sussex has set up a firm  to teach women essential woodworking skills.

Georjie Adams established ‘Her Hands’ after becoming fed- up with the “relentless sexism” she faced in the industry.

She told the BBC, that carpentry was “far more about technique and principle, than how much muscle you’ve got in your bicep.”
