Homeowners are spending over £500 million a year employing tradespeople to fix botched DIY jobs – that’s according to research from Direct Line Business Insurance.

The research also claimed that 85% of tradespeople attributed the surge in people taking on ambitious DIY projects to the rise of instructional videos on social media.

Nearly 60% of homeowners surveyed who had started a DIY project, said they had been influenced by social media.

One in five homeowners admitted their DIY projects had only been partially successful.

Screwfix is lobbying the government to ease recruitment headaches and reduce taxes on small businesses and sole traders.

Research from the builder’s merchant found that 60% of tradespeople were concerned about rising tax burdens and increasing admin work due to government regulation.

The same report also found that fewer than 1 in 5 small firms were able to hire an apprentice in the last year.

Screwfix’s Voice of the Trade report also said that nearly 60% of tradies thought that the availability of skilled labour should be higher on the government’s agenda.
