AUDIO NEWS: HMRC cracks down on deliberate VAT return errors and CITB completes rollout of Employer Networks

The number of heavy fines issued by HMRC for deliberate VAT return errors, has jumped by nearly 40% in the last year, claims business advisors, Lubbock Fine. 

VAT-related penalties were handed out to over 2,700 firms for a total of £153 million, for the last tax year.

Deliberate VAT errors refer to cases where HMRC believes a business has made an active decision to illegally under-pay.

Jas Dhillon, VAT Partner at Lubbock Fine said: “HMRC is getting tougher with its VAT fines and issuing a growing number of its most serious penalties. It is difficult not to conclude that it’s a concerted effort to bring in more cash.”

CITB has completed the rollout of its Employer Networks across Great Britain. 

The programme, which started as a pilot in 2022, ensures that funding decisions are led by employers, and so are meeting industry needs.

Deb Madden, executive director for Nations Engagement at CITB said: “It’s vital we have a firm grasp of what skills are required and where they’re needed across the country.

And lastly, more than half of pet owners prioritise their animal friends when making home renovations – that’s according to research from Houzz.

The survey of over 1600 pet owners, found that nearly a third included design elements specifically for the pet, such as incorporating room for an animal bed.
