The number of heavy fines issued by HMRC for deliberate VAT return errors, has jumped by nearly 40% in the last year, claims business advisors, Lubbock Fine. VAT-related penalties were handed out to over 2,700 firms for a total of £153 million, for the last tax year. Deliberate VAT errors refer to cases where HMRC believes a business has made an active decision to illegally under-pay. Jas Dhillon, VAT Partner at Lubbock Fine said: “HMRC is getting tougher with its VAT fines and issuing a growing number of its most serious penalties. It is difficult not to conclude that it’s a concerted effort to bring in more cash.” --- CITB has completed the rollout of its Employer Networks across Great Britain. The programme, which started as a pilot in 2022, ensures that funding decisions are led by employers, and so are meeting industry needs.
