AUDIO NEWS: HBF pushes back on government housing plan and Band of Builders replaces roof

Posted: Tuesday, May 27th, 2025

The Home Builders Federation has pushed back against government plans to speed up house building.

At the weekend, deputy prime minister Angela Rayner unveiled plans that would allow local councils to acquire vital land if they thought a developer was sitting on it, and impose penalties if builders fell behind agreed build-out schedules.

Under the proposals, developers now have to commit to delivery timelines and provide regular updates.

The Home Builders Federation denied members weren’t sitting on land and urged the government to focus on the actual reasons for the subdued housing supply.

Handymen are paying less for their van insurance than other tradespeople – that’s according to research from Go Compare.

Tradespeople who tend to work in their local area, such as decorators, gardeners, builders and carpenters are seen as low risk and benefit from sub-£500 premiums.

In contrast, the average insurance cost for a courier van was over £1,600 a year.

Volunteers from Band of Builders have installed a new roof, complete with solar panels, at the home of an 8-year-old recovering from cancer.

It took a team of 12 roofers just three days to fit the new apex roof and make the house watertight.

Ben Firth, who is now in remission was initially unable to return home due to the damp and mould caused by the leaking roof.
