The drop in construction output in July is a reminder that industry still faces “challenging times”, warned the Federation of Master Builders. ONS figures released last week showed a disappointing 0.4% drop, attributed to a decline in new work and repair and maintenance jobs. It was the first fall in construction output since April. Alongside recent announcements designed to kick start the house building market, the trade body claims the industry also needs a long-term skills plan. Brian Berry, chief executive, FMB said, significantly boosting “the numbers of construction workers” is key to delivering stability. --- Screwfix has opened six “ultra-compact”, convenience stores in high footfall areas of London. The outlets carry 3,000 essential products and offer a click and collect service. The builders merchant plans to open another 14 City stores by the end of the year, including some outside the capital. --- A Scottish electrician who ‘rage quit’ his low paid job installing EV chargers, has spent the summer travelling around the country living in the back of his converted Ford Transit. 30-year-old Dom Wright, who left his job in March, spent £2,000 adding a double bed, a desk and a portable shower to his van.
