Contractors competing for major public sector work will have to show how they are contributing to UK jobs and skills. Under a government consultation process launched this week, bidders on road, rail, school and hospital jobs will be ranked not just on price, but also how they contribute to local communities, including offering jobs, training and apprenticeships. The employment and training opportunities will be tracked to ensure promises are kept. Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden said: “we want to open up opportunities on wider infrastructure projects… that boost British jobs and skills.” --- Nearly 70% of UK tradespeople have never sought therapy despite the mental health crisis in the construction — that’s according to research from On the Tools. The report suggests that although help is available, the stigma around mental health continues to stop construction workers from seeking support. Lee Wilcox, co-founder and CEO of the online community said: “The data… should serve as a wake-up call. It’s not enough for mental health support to exist, it has to be accepted and normalised within the community.” --- A joiner from Workington was ‘overwhelmed’ when he got an invite to meet King Charles.
