Construction output is expected to contract by 3.2% over the course of 2024, claims a report from the Building Cost Information Service. Although the industry is recovering from a period of high inflation, firms are now facing falling demand and stagnating output. Dr David Crosthwaite, chief economist at BCIS said that recessionary pressures were feeding through to construction from the wider economy. The high cost of borrowing, particularly for the private sector, was proving to be a “major barrier to investment”, he added. --- Home design and build firms are anticipating a bumper year – that’s according to a survey from Houzz. The poll of 150 Houzz member firms indicated that 53% of design and build companies expected 2024 to be a good, or very good year. Interior designers and architects also reported a bullish outlook. Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist, said member firms were expecting to turn the corner after a challenging 2023. --- And finally, a Pembrokeshire electrician is stepping into the boxing ring to raise money for Brain Tumour Charity. Mike Few, from Fishguard, whose wife suffers from a rare brain tumour will take part in the Ultra White Collar Boxing event in April.
