AUDIO NEWS: Construction firm insolvencies drop by 8%, and bricklaying apprentice commutes 161 miles to school

Posted: Friday, February 21st, 2025

The number of construction businesses going bust slowed by 8% in 2024.

According to the Insolvency Service, just over 4,000 construction firms went out of business in England and Wales last year.

The sector had the most insolvencies of any industry, accounting for 16% of all bankruptcies.

Speaking to The Construction Index, financial services consultant Mark Supperstone said that while cost pressures had eased, “low margins” still posed a risk “with the full impact of the Autumn budget now clearly being felt across the sector.”

A 21-year-old bricklaying apprentice has to commute 161-miles by train to go to school.

Riordan Keeley is studying his Level 2 Bricklaying at the National House Building Council training hub in Newcastle, while his apprenticeship is in Gedling, Nottinghamshire.

Keeley, who finished school during lockdown, struggled to find an apprenticeship before joining Keepmoat.

He told his local paper that the long commute was a small price to pay to get his career opportunity.

A community in county Tyrone has donated thousands of pounds to the Air Ambulance after it helped a local bricklayer who’d fallen 20 feet while on site.

Peter Quinn was flown to the Royal Victoria Hospital where it was discovered he had fractured a bone in his back.

Quinn, who had to wear full body cast for three months, has now returned to work.
