AUDIO NEWS: Construction activity up in July and hero builder helps save family from burning home

Construction activity in July accelerated at its fastest rate in the last two years – that’s according to a survey of industry purchasing managers. 

S&P’s Construction Purchasing Managers Index leapt over 55 points as a wave of new orders were secured.

Andrew Harker, economics director with S&P said: “firms saw the strongest increases in new orders and activity since 2022, as paused projects were released amid reports of improved customer confidence.”

Nearly 70% of plumbers in Scotland and Northern Ireland have fallen victim to tool theft, claims research from SNIPEF. 

The survey of 700 members of the trade body, found that tool theft had now become a routine issue for two thirds of respondents.

A similar number also said that tool theft was a “significant disruption” to their business. 

Nearly 40% of members reported that they now faced increased insurance premiums due to the issue.

A passing builder helped to save a family from a house fire in Ilford, believed to have been started by a faulty e-bike battery. 

The unnamed builder used a piece of scaffolding as a makeshift ladder to help two children and three adults escape from a first-floor window. 

London Fire Brigade’s deputy commissioner Richard Field said it was “incredibly fortunate” that no lives were lost.
