A builder from South London has won a £1 million tax battle with HRMC, after being accused of flipping properties without paying tax. Gary Ives renovated and sold three family homes between 2008 and 2013. The HRMC took the view that the properties were subject to income tax, but Ives convinced a tribunal that the properties were not purchased with a view to making short term profits, but as family homes and so the transactions were not “trading in nature”. HRMC said it was reviewing the tribunal’s decision and considering its options. ---- The brick industry is on the verge of collapse, claimed the GMB Union last week. According to Stuart Harrison, organiser with the trade union, crippling job cuts are expected as a stagnating housebuilding market and skyrocketing energy prices have pushed manufacturers to the brink. Forterra, Ibstock and Marshalls are among firms that have announced job cuts, or closed factories in the last year. Harrison said: “Without a thriving brick industry, the UK’s housing crisis can only get worse.” --- And finally, actor Hugh Grant has made a £20,000 donation to Depher – a social enterprise that offers free plumbing services to the elderly and vulnerable, in and around Burnley. The founder of Depher, James Anderson said the latest denotation would give “hope to thousands of people, families and children”, especially with the cost-of-living crisis.
