A guide to windows for your self build project

Posted: Friday, December 22nd, 2023

Mark Millar host of Building Ideas, was recently joined by Daniel Smith from Internorm to discuss different window options and Chris Wann from Korniche Aluminium Systems. Mark and the guests talked about aluminium, flat glass, self cleaning windows and roof lanterns to consider for your self build.

Smith said: “I think the market has changed over the last few years and to kind of run through it now UPVC is still a choice although people are moving away from that even though it is cheaper from price point at the point of purchasing and cheaper to turn around from a manufacturer perspective. UPVC windows are seen as the lower end of aluminium windows.

“More and more builders are moving away from that and historically it was seen as the cheap option in terms of buying price and the manufacturing turn around times but it may be seen as low end for people on a self build project. Timber is still an option for building windows even though the maintenance issue over the lifespan of the project is the issue. The skills available for people with skills to refurbish timber style windows is less in the market now and that tends to put people off o select timber as an option for windows on their self build.”

Wann said aluminium is a material that has over the years  started to be widely used in architectural projects. “The use is wide and includes windows, doors, patio doors etc and it’s part of the structure material that in the past would either be used as timber for example.

“Aluminium has increasingly been used for doors and windows even though people are concerned about the material’s resistance to heat transfer.”
