The nation is building again!
"Get Britain building" has been a slogan for some time, and it’s come with a renewed focus on ensuring the housing market is well supplied. However, that’s not the only ambitious wave of builds coming our way.
Great Britain is embarking on an incredible mix of construction projects, which shows that not only is there a lot of good opportunities out there, but that we haven't stopped thinking big quite yet. Here are some of the most important, expensive, and sizable builds coming our way.
Universal Studios
First up is the new Universal Studios that is being built in Bedfordshire. An exciting theme park inspired by cinematic source material, it’s estimated that the 700-acre complex will be completed by 2031.
Costing a whopping £5 billion during its early stages, the project is creating over 20,000 construction jobs and is thought to be bringing £50 billion to the UK economy by 2055. Check out Fix Radio’s coverage of the incredible site to learn more.
Project Olympus
Data centres have become a major topic of discussion, especially with the rising use of AI. There are a number of data centre projects in Great Britain, but Project Olympus is one of the most substantial. Built in the Silvertown area of the London Docklands, the idea is that this facility will handle complex digital services.
Spanning approximately 2.3 million square feet, the project requires a new 300 MVA electricity substation and a 5-storey data hall. With 2,500 construction jobs created every year by the project and £3 billion going into its development, Project Olympus remains one of London’s most expensive builds.
HS2
It’s one of the most controversial and much-discussed construction projects in British history. HS2 is still under development, although the plans have been scaled back massively. Currently, work is underway to connect London Euston to Birmingham Curzon Street.
As of this writing, there are 350 sites in active development, 4 new stations under construction and 230 kilometres of track being laid. The revised cost is up to £102.7 billion, but with the full route not actually opening till 2043, there’s still a lot more work to be done.
Hinkley Point C
As Great Britain continues to look for solutions for its energy crisis, Nuclear Power Plants have been at the top of the agenda. One of the biggest being developed right now is Hinkley Point C in Somerset, a two-unit power station and the first to be built in a generation.
Capable of generating 3,200 MWe in energy, this massive build is costing up to $50 billion, with 25,000 construction jobs up for grabs. It’s scheduled to become operational as soon as 2030, but delays could push it back to 2031!
These projects, across a number of sectors, highlight Britain's resilient construction industry.
