Is the end near for the beloved BBC series?
Construction shows have formed the backbone of the BBC for years. Some of the most enduring series have focused on home renovations and impressive builds. However, as the BBC faces a financial crisis of sorts, the channel’s executives must. make some tough decisions.
Among them is the move to rest a beloved fan favourite construction series that has been on the air for almost 30 years. One that features Fix Radio's very own Chris Frediani. With that news comes the end of an era and a worry that shows in this genre might be dying out.
DIY SOS Is No More
As the BBC goes through its new savings initiative, DIY SOS is going to be taking a year off from being broadcast. However, the show won’t disappear for good, because it will instead be taking on a new form. One that honours its history and keeps the brand in the public eye.
A new spin-off series titled DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will instead be aired, one that serves as a compilation of previous episodes and offers the chance to revisit some major transformations. These highlights may come from any era of the franchise, whether that’s back in its first season in 1999, or up to the present day.
This comes as the BBC also cancels other major shows like Live at the Apollo and Blankety Blank.
It’s Not Goodbye Forever
It’s important to point out that the BBC is not suggesting that the show is axed forever. While it will be rested in 2027, that phrase has been very carefully selected. Although plans could change, right now it appears as though the series could return for a run in 2028.
For now, though, fans can enjoy the most recent series on BBC iPlayer, where a roster of new families find that their homes have been transformed when they are in need of a boost.
