Weather warnings suggest there’s a storm on the way!
Perhaps you’ve already seen the reports that a severe weather shift could be on the way. Forecasts suggest that a storm known as El Niño could hit the UK as early as October, running all the way through to the new year.
Experts predict a severe change in weather which could cause a whiplash effect, first producing strong winds, torrential downpours and a warmer climate before switching to colder spells and biting frost. This unprecedented climate phenomenon is likely set to disrupt food and energy prices, but there’s another factor that must be considered.
El Niño could also have a massive impact on the construction industry.
The First Wave
In the first wave, the construction industry will be facing wetter and windier conditions which could slow any major projects. With severe weather warnings imminent, some plans may have to be put on hold altogether, as the UK tackles the storm head-on.
Flash floods will overwhelm standard drainage systems while those heavy winds create high risks for crane operations. Logistical nightmares may occur as supply chain bottlenecks cause delays.
By protecting structures against those winds, accelerating waterproofing and crafting temporary drainage solutions, you can mitigate some of the effects. Get ahead on your supply too, to counter any future shortages.
The Second Wave
The second wave of El Niño is said to arrive later in winter, into the new year. This is where a major shift in the temperature occurs. With cold snaps and freezing conditions across the UK, construction sites have another set of problems on their hands.
Not only are these weather patterns difficult to work in, but the water that built up during the first wave could freeze and cause foundational issues. Concrete and mortar work may be halted due to the cold, while energy costs could soar, putting your projects over budget.
Again, there are solutions, though. If your builds are watertight, then lower temperatures shouldn’t pose as much of a threat. Stockpiling thermal clothing and heaters will help keep your crew warm.
While El Niño could cause chaos for the construction industry, careful pre-planning should hopefully keep your builds on track.
