AUDIO NEWS: Wickes pledges to mark 260,000 tools for free and trade bodies support the Milburn Report

Wickes promises to forensically market 260,000 tools in 2026, trade bodies speak up on the Milburn report and bricklaying drones make their debut

Wickes has pledged to forensically mark 260,000 tools for free at a series of Theft Prevention Community events this year.

The builder’s merchant has also partnered with the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) to offer emotional support to those affected by tool theft.

Research from Wickes suggests one in five tradespeople suffer from ongoing stress and anxiety after having their tools stolen, and 7% have considered leaving the trades entirely.

Trades bodies are calling on the government to act after the publication of the Milburn Report last week.

The landmark report said that youth unemployment is costing Britain more than £125 billion a year.

John Newcomb of the BMF said the report highlighted the need for system change to create opportunities for young people.

The NFRC added that increased funding for technical and vocational training was essential.

Researchers in Sweden have been testing an autonomous bricklaying system that uses two drones.

The system, where one drone positions the brick and the other applies adhesive in mid-air, could shape future approaches to construction work at height.

The system still needs to address issues around battery life, wind conditions, flight stability and site safety before it is ready for tests on live building sites.
