AUDIO NEWS: The North East is the best place for tradespeople and petrol stations fail to pass on savings

The North East tops the UK Tradespeople Hotspots Index, petrol stations fail to pass on savings, and a roofer writes a superhero comic about the trades

The North East of England has been ranked the best place to work for tradespeople — that’s according to an analysis from Fergus.

The UK Tradespeople Hotspots Index revealed sharp differences between regional employment, pay and working conditions among the country’s skilled trades.

Despite having the highest wages, London finished last on the index.

The capital’s overall score was pulled down by housing costs, living expenses and insurance premiums, relative to earnings.

Electricians working in the East Midlands posted the single highest score, combining high pay with strong job growth.

Petrol stations in the UK are still not passing on changes in wholesale prices quickly enough to consumers, claims a government watchdog.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised concerns about passive pricing strategies, designed to maintain high profit margins.

The body also sent over 1,000 letters and 53 compliance notices to retailers for failing to register with the government-run Fuel Finder price comparison scheme.

A US-based roofer has created a superhero comic book that aims to inspire young people to enter the trade.

Charles Clark wrote Chuckaroofer to introduce middle school students to the construction industry.

He hopes contractors and manufacturers will distribute the book at career fairs and school assemblies.
