Tradespeople join protest lenient sentences for tool thieves, FMB say young homeowners are more likely to hire a rogue trader and WIT conference takes place next month
Nearly 100 tradespeople and their vans descended on the Magistrates’ Court in Romford yesterday to protest lenient sentences being handed out to convicted tool thieves.
The event coincided with the appearance of two suspects charged with selling stolen tools. The defendants pled guilty and will now head to the Crown Court for sentencing.
Shoaib Awan of Trades United pledged he would organise an even bigger van rally outside the Crown Court when the suspects are due to appear.
If they are sentenced in the Crown Court, it’s thought they will face a stiffer penalty.

Consumers who rely on social media and comparison platforms to find tradespeople are risking hiring a rogue trader, claims the FMB.
A survey by the trade body found just 8% of homeowners under 35 bothered with traditional vetting when hiring a builder.
Only 15% of young homeowners verify formal qualifications, such as a Gas Safe registration.

Professional adventurer and inspirational speaker Bonita Norris will headline the Women Installers Together (WIT) conference this year.
Norris was the youngest person ever to scale Mount Everest and reach the North Pole.
Held in London, the free conference aims to connect tradeswomen from across Britain, at whatever stage of their career.
