New regulations and inflation add £76,000 to the cost of a new house, tradespeople struggle for sleep and 1,000 tool marking kits to be given away
Taxes, green rule changes and inflation have added £76,000 onto the cost of a new home—that’s according to the Home Builders Federation (HBF).
The trade body warned that the mounting costs were choking off housing delivery.
Nearly half of the additional costs were attributed to soaring labour and material prices.
Regulations covering biodiversity net gain, building rules and the Future Homes Standard add another £23,000 to house prices.
New taxes and levies, including the building safety levy, add another £7 grand per plot.

A lack of sleep is the biggest long term health concern for nearly half of tradespeople.
In the survey from Tradesman Saver, 59% of tradies said poor sleep was affecting their mental health.
Other common health concerns listed by survey respondents include a poor diet, lack of exercise and excessive screen time.
A spokesperson for the insurance brand said limited sleep can make it harder to stay focused and manage stress.

Travis Perkins has partnered with Sussex Police and local Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne to give away 1,000 tool marking kits.
Tradespeople will be able to get their tools marked at designated stores this month.
If marked equipment is stolen and recovered by the police, it can be easily identified under UV light.
