A 23-year-old plumbing apprentice has left for Ukraine to join resistance fighters on the front line. Pavlo Serdiuk moved from Ukraine to Cork five years ago and says it is now his patriotic duty to return home. Pavlo told RTE News that though he is "scared" to join the resistance against Russia, he feels he has "to go there and do what I can," reports CorkBeo. "I'm not going to lie I am scared, the closer you get the more scared you are but it is what it is," he said. Razvan Atat, who worked with Pavlo in Cork, said he is hoping for his friend's safe return as soon as possible. He flew out of Dublin Airport on Monday, February 28th with other Ukrainians, and they have been given supplies including helmets by other members of the Irish-Ukrainian community. It comes after the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called for all overseas nationals to return to the country and defend it from advancing Russian troops if they are able to. Vladimir Putin moved forces, including nuclear deterrent, to "special alert", in response to "aggression" from NATO countries. Ukrainian officials have said that 352 civilians have been killed in the war so far, including 14 children. They have also said that 4,300 members of the Russian forces have died.
