Phoebe Baker, who works for sustainable tech expert, Pilot Group, as an account manager, saved businesses the equivalent of 86,000 houses’ annual kWhs, after working out how Pilot Group’s Energy Management System (EMS) tech could make the savings. The EMS is a way for businesses to monitor and control their energy systems, using smart sensors and AI to increase heating systems efficiency. It’s saved companies an average of 40 percent on their energy bills. EMS tech also led to 47,000 tonnes of carbon emission reductions last year - the same as removing 12,200 cars from the road. Since starting at the company four years ago, Phoebe has been responsible for more than 500 EMS system installations, which have led to the financial and environmental savings. She started as a sales executive in late 2018 and quickly progressed to become a Field Sales Executive, taking the role of EMS Account Manager in early 2020. Phoebe’s work has seen her help a huge number of companies reduce their energy consumption, and she is also now a spokesperson for Pilot Group, often seen discussing the future of energy management online and at roundtables. Phoebe’s impressive achievements are even more remarkable as they have happened to the backdrop of working within a highly male-dominated industry, one that is only becoming more so. With International Women’s Day this week, Phoebe says there is still much work to do to make opportunities for women and girls more readily available and environments more welcoming. She said: “It’s so important to celebrate International Women’s Day as it is a perfect time to reflect and understand how far we have come in terms of equality and that should be celebrated. “However, I think as much as we celebrate how far we have come it is also important to highlight what work still needs to be done as there is still many women and girls out there who are still fighting their fight to be equal.” “The industry I work in is very male dominant and your ability and knowledge as a woman is often questioned. I think there are a lot of assumptions within the industry I work in as to whether you have the same level of knowledge as a man in the position.” “With my age and the fact I am a woman, I have had to prove myself a million times more than a man would have to in the industry, but by proving myself I have overcome those barriers and earned respect from male colleagues. “If you believe you can do it then you can do it. If you have a drive or passion, don’t let anyone stand in your way. With the right balance of hard work and determination, you will get there, however long it takes. “Something that was said to me when I first started with Pilot Group is, ‘Have confidence in yourself and your ability’. For someone who has always struggled with confidence, I took this advice and ran with it. “It isn’t something that happens overnight but if you start to believe in yourself, everything else will follow.”
