Tradespeople can't afford switch to electric vans

Posted: Friday, January 26th, 2024

The van company Vanarama has suggested rising insurance costs could price various tradespeople out of electric commercial vehicles, according to Express.

As more motorists consider making the switch from a petrol or diesel model to an EV, the company found that higher insurance rates on electric vehicles mean many drivers will have to pay over £1,000 for their cover.

Using price comparison websites, the company changed the job description to see how much it would set back motorists to get a 12-month policy in a Vauxhall Vivaro-e, the UK’s best-selling electric van.

According to the study, mechanics pay the most to get insurance for an electric commercial vehicle, with the average fee standing at £1,159.91.

In comparison, Vanarama noted that insuring the same driver in a diesel van would cost more than £320 less.

As the cost of vehicle insurance rises for all motorists, the higher retail cost of electric models means that owners generally pay extra for cover.

Vanarama noted that, as electric vehicles grow in popularity, it could discourage some from becoming tradespeople, increasing the already noticeable shortage in the UK.

Nevertheless, a mild incentive to encourage drivers to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle is that they are exempt from paying road tax until April 2025.
