With the start of the year a little slower for many painters and decorators, and tax self assessment looming on the horizon, January is often a cash-strapped month for many in the trade. On this week's episode of The Painting & Decorating Show, hosts Joel Bardall and TVJ are joined by fellow decorators Gareth Roberts and Sean Kelly to share money saving tips and tricks, and ways to work 'smarter'. North Wales-based Gareth Roberts reckons the biggest cost for a decorator is fuel. While there's no way to bring the prices of fuel down, he's recently got a fuel card. Gareth also buys materials in bulk. "I always tend to carry primer and satinwood and I get my money back by charging customers a small fee for using them," he says. Sean Kelly feels the same about travel expenses and fuel costs. "They are difficult to pass on to customers. Working in London is a whole different level of expensive. A day's job costs £60 just for parking," he says. Joel Bardall believes in using high-quality materials to save money. While it may seem paradoxical, he argues that using cheap quality products is "nothing but a waste of money and time". As for logistical expenses, Joel tries to work as locally as possible. "One of the other things I've done is asking clients for photos in advance so I can give them a rough idea of the cost which cuts down my travel." To listen to the full show, please click below.
