Mark Millar on this week's Building Ideas podcast delves into designing garden rooms from expert Luke Millard who reveals what's possible, planning permission, ideas for different kinds of materials used for cladding and more. Luke Millard is an expert in designing indoor and outdoor spaces. He says that he's been inspired to create spaces that keep people outside rather than always being indoors. During the lockdown, garden rooms became even more popular, he shares. He also explains the design process of creating a garden room which starts with understanding what the client requires and their exact budget. "At BGR we have our architects which helps us make changes during the process. We don't want to spend two to four weeks designing when a client doesn't have the budget." Millard also talks about popular trends. "Gyms are currently massively popular in garden rooms of late. Throughout the pandemic, it was home offices." He adds: "Everything is possible with garden rooms from four walls to annexes. The biggest garden room we've built was 60sq, double storey. It had 1800 linear metres of timber, eco-roof, solar panels, a mezzanine, a spiral staircase and a garage with fireline fire doors." Millard also touched on planning permissions, heating, cooling, cladding, and materials that can be used to build a garden room. Listen to the podcast here.
