Speaking on The Heating and Plumbing Show, Kimbo Betty from Heating Academy, said it’s important to go about training in the right way.
So, how does he think we can go about heat pump training in a better way?
Kimbo says: “First of all, it's about understanding how critical understanding DT flow pipe sizing and how to set pumps and how to work radiator sizes out.”
He adds: “We’re so used to using inspired guesswork with boilers but that’s just not going to cut it. You know, any old pump will do, any old boiler will do, any pipe size in any radiator – you bang any old stuff in. And eventually everything is so oversized, that nobody's cold, so nobody complains. But of course, it's not ok.”
Why does this matter?
Well, he says: “When we've had boilers that are 30 kilowatts, and we've already had a seven- or eight-kilowatt heat loss, you know, we've got this extra 20 kilowatts of energy knocking about that can fill in all the gaps in the blanks of things that we've done wrong. But when you've only got a six-kilowatt heat pump, and you've got a six kilowatt heart load, and it's minus four outside, you need every single ounce of energy that that heat pump is generated, so we can't afford lose any of it.
When you explain that, you see the light bulb moments, when guys go, ‘Oh, I didn't realise, Oh, wow’. We have to approach it with it with a different attitude, and a completely DTX different detail.”
The problem, he says, it a lot to do with old habits: “Some of these engineers have been working with boilers for years, and they need to be aware that that this a completely different animal, and we have to approach it in a different way.
“We should be trying to achieve the greatest COP that we can for our customers, and the environment, and our grandchildren.”
But, he adds, sometimes this feels like an uphill struggle: “I think the only people that are likely to give a monkeys about the COP are the small, self-employed companies and the small companies that employ a few good blokes, as opposed to these big national companies that are all about the money.”
He concludes: “I know it's all about money, it's always about money. But you know, you can earn plenty of money, and you can do a half decent job, and give your customer and a half decent COP, as opposed to, you know, do what some of these big companies do, which is all ‘wham bam, thank you, ma'am.’”
