Workloads and new business enquiries have dropped off for roofers at the start of this year — that’s according to a report from the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC). Just 36% of contractors reported increased workloads, down 12% from the end of 2024. Roofers also reported widespread issues with the rising costs of materials and labour. But not all cost increases were being passed on to customers. Just 54% of respondents said they’d upped their tender prices — down 14% on the end of last year. --- Nesta is giving away 5,000 heat pumps, plus training, to installers, so they can fit them in their own homes. The ‘Start at Home’ scheme provides installers with hands-on experience and boosts their confidence in the technology. Nesta’s research indicates, only 27% of installers fit a heat pump within a year of finishing their training, due to low market demand, not being accredited and a lack of confidence. --- With temperatures soaring, the TUC has warned construction bosses that they must keep employees safe while working outside. Anyone working outside during the hottest part of the day are at serious risk of sunstroke, heat stress and skin cancer.
