Trade recommendation websites must vet the firms they advertise and tackle fake reviews, under new rules designed to protect homeowners and tradespeople.
Government watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, working with various trading standards bodies investigated the conduct of unnamed recommendation sites.
The study found several problems, including a failure to remove fake reviews, inadequate vetting procedures, and weak sanctions on rogue traders.
CMA’s interim executive director for consumer protection, George Lusty said there was worrying evidence “suggesting people could be misled into thinking these sites actually check traders… which isn’t the case.”

Construction output was up nearly 2% in May – that’s according to the latest government figures.
A 2.7% boost in new work and a small increase in the repair and maintenance sector was enough to lift output after a small dip in April.
Clive Docwra, managing director of property and construction consultancy Mc Bains said: “After previous statistics showed the construction sector lagging behind the modest uptick in growth witnessed in other industries, today’s figures are much better than expected.”

Louie Callaghan and three mates completed the challenge at the end of June.
The funds will be used to pay for equipment and support for Albert’s care.
