AUDIO NEWS: Sexually harassment is endemic in the industry and housebuilders agree £100m payout

Posted: Thursday, July 10th, 2025

A shocking 31% of female construction workers have been sexually assaulted at work — that’s according to a survey from trade union, Unite.

The survey of hundreds of female workers showed that sexual harassment was endemic across the industry.

Over half of respondents said they had been inappropriately touched, and 65% claimed they had experienced unwanted flirting, gesturing or sexual remarks.

Many respondents didn’t report harassment as they were worried they wouldn’t be believed, or it would put their job at risk.

Just 8% said the issue had been addressed by management.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham described the survey results as damning and added that: “women workers are being failed by bosses”.

Seven leading housebuilders had agreed a £100 million payout to shut down an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The government watchdog found evidence of information sharing linked to prices, but the housebuilders have not admitted any wrongdoing.

The builders will make the payment to affordable housing schemes around the UK.

The payout is the largest the CMA has secured through commitments from companies under investigation.

A charity football is being held this weekend in memory of joiner, Danny Mallet.

The popular 24-year-old died suddenly in 2023, after being rushed to hospital complaining of severe headaches.

The game will raise funds for Encephalitis International and children’s hospice, Zoe’s Place.
