AUDIO NEWS: Leaders warn PM about new visa rules and roofer has van stolen off his drive

Posted: Wednesday, May 14th, 2025

Construction leaders are concerned that the tightening of immigration rules on overseas workers could undermine the government’s 1.5 million housebuilding target.

The government’s migration crackdown, unveiled by Sir Keir Starmer in a whitepaper earlier this week, requires people applying for UK work visas to have a higher standard of English than the current rules state.

Rico Wojtulewicz, head of policy at the National Federation of Builders, warned that a tightening of visa rules would “without question” harm the government’s housing policy.

The CITB has invested over £1.3 million to support mental health first aid and awareness courses since 2018.

The funding has provided mental health training for 52,000 construction workers.

The industry training body has also funnelled another £1.5 million to mental projects over the last seven years.

Tim Balcon, CEO, CITB said “there is no getting away from the fact that the construction industry is facing a mental health crisis, and we all need to be collectively addressing this issue.”

A young roofer has had to start calling his clients and rearranging jobs after his van and tools were stolen from his driveway.

25-year-old Chris Jack, who set up his business, Mountcastle Roofing late last year, told the local paper that the theft was a huge blow.

Items from the van were recovered the next day, however, efforts to trace the van were still ongoing.
