AUDIO NEWS: Checkatrade promises to crack down on roofers and a lack of skills holds up Net Zero progress

Posted: Monday, January 6th, 2025

Checkatrade has tightened up requirements for roofers, as it aims to crack down on what it believes to be one of the least regulated sectors of the trades.

To join the platform, roofers will now need to provide evidence of at least six months of incorporation and trading history. Additional measures are to be implemented in the coming year.

The directory platform also said it was re-vetting thousands of tradespeople and paying special attention to the roofing sector due to the lack of formal qualifications or licensing requirements.

According to Checkatrade, the roofing sector is ripe territory for rogue traders, as most customers cannot readily see the repairs or installations.

A low understanding of retrofitting technologies and methods is threatening to stall the UK’s progress towards Net Zero – that’s according to a survey by the Building Services Research & Information Association.

In a poll of 500 construction professionals, four out of ten said they had insufficient training, and that understanding of retrofit techniques was currently ‘lacking’.

The survey also highlighted significant doubts particularly among sole traders about the long term effectiveness of retrofitting work.
