Is 2024 finally the year that heat pumps take off? Or will it be another year of under-delivery? Andy Cam and Todd Glister investigate the state of play on today's show, as they speak to Adam Padilla, Luke Nicholls, and Georgia Greenfield.
Georgia has focused on heat pumps since she started her career. "I always wanted to learn a trade and I think it's a good idea to go into a sustainable career." She believes air-source heat pumps are the future.
The lack of trained installers is often cited as one of the biggest challenges facing the widespread adoption of heat pumps in the UK. According to Adam, schemes insight manager with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), 420 contractors joined the scheme in 2023, a 20% increase from the previous year.
"This takes the contractor base to over 1700. This growth is quite significant. Since 2018, we've seen record-breaking years in the uptake of heat pumps. We had 40,000 installations last year. We're on track for a 30% increase again this year," he adds.
