According to Checkatrade’s newly commissioned UK Trade Skills Index for 2023, the trade and construction sector is facing a crisis in recruitment. There is high demand and need for skilled workers in professions such as bricklaying, electrics and carpentry, and plumbing in particular, with vacancies at an all-time high. Richard Harpin, founder of Homeserve, of which Checkatrade is a subsidiary, commented that the report: “Should come as a wakeup call to everyone involved in the trade and construction industry, with plumbers in particular in big demand, not just now but for the next decade.” Richard described the index’s finding as “urgent and alarming”. To tackle the shortages, Richard and Checkatrade are launching their ‘Get In” campaign to encourage young people aged under 25 to take up careers in skilled trades via apprenticeship routes. The hope is that the initiative, which will launch in spring this year, will encourage thousands of young people and school leavers to consider training in a trade, with the scheme seeking to boost to their connections and opportunities as well. The UK desperately needs to recruit skilled workers to keep up with growing demand in the sector, and plug the increasing gaps in skills shortages which rose from 29% in early 2021 to a massive 55% by the end of the same year, with the problem continuing through 2022.
