Demonstrations on the 4th of June put an important issue front and centre.
Tool theft is a huge problem facing the construction industry right now and many tradies feel that the issue isn’t being taken seriously. Many would argue that simply not enough is being done to prevent or deter thieves from committing these serious crimes.
The 4th of June marked a major turning point in the struggle, when two individuals arrested for tool theft were scheduled to appear in court. With tradies hoping the case would be taken to the Crown Court, Fix Radio was on the ground to cover the events.
The Van’s Are On Hand

The plan was to hold a van rally in Romford, where the case in question was set to be examined. Shoaib Awan, a gas engineer and campaigner, urged tradespeople to show their support, put down their tools and take part in the protest.
Attendance on the day was significant, with over a hundred builders, labourers and experts showing up to make their voices be heard. The main talking point was the fact that this crime was more than just a matter for the Magistrate’s Court. This was not something as simple as a parking fine. Activists were looking for proper prison time.
The End Result

The news of the day served in favour of the hard-working tradespeople who gave up their time to attend the rally. Both parties pleaded guilty, meaning that their case will now be taken to the Crown Court. Tradies are hoping their final verdict is strong enough to act as a deterrent.
With the community fed up with this spike in thefts, the hope on the ground is that this is a step towards proper action. We’ll keep you updated on any breakthroughs in the case as the battle for van safety rolls on.
