From Construction Sites To Wonderwall - Oasis’ Time In The Trade

The England anthem has taken the team through the World Cup.

England has had a historic run in the World Cup thus far, and a familiar anthem has become the song of the tournament, as Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ blasts from the stands at the end of every victory. It’s a moment that the players cherish and the fan base worldwide has etched into their memories forever.

While it might become an enduring representation of the England team moving forward, Oasis’ links to construction run even deeper than they do with football. We previously covered Noel Gallagher’s time on building sites, but he isn’t the only band member to have spent time in the trade.

Bonehead Was A Plasterer

Rhythm guitarist and Oasis co-founder, Bonehead, has become a staple of the band and has joined the Gallagher brothers on stage during their most recent tour, even after struggling with health issues.

Before he picked up his guitar and travelled the world, Paul Arthurs could be found working as a plasterer. He worked with his father in Manchester, learning the trade and famously used his van to travel to the Stone Roses' 1990 Spike Island performance.

Tony McCarroll Worked As A Labourer

While Tony McCarroll might no longer be a member of Oasis, the drummer and co-founder was a critical member in the band’s early days and was featured heavily on the album ‘Definitely Maybe.’

Before his change of fortune though, Tony McCarroll was working as a labourer right up until 1991. His father was also in the building trade, and so Tony would spend a great deal of time out on construction sites learning the family business.

Liam Gallagher’s Stint Was Short-Lived

While Noel Gallagher might have followed in his father’s footsteps as a labourer and joiner, Liam Gallagher wasn’t quite so keen to copy the rest of his family. Instead, Liam would chart his own path.

Although he took on a few gigs on construction sites, it was apparent that the industry wasn’t for him. Instead, he started to build fences and even worked as a car valet and at a gardening centre!

‘Wonderwall’ might be the England team’s most recent anthem, but the song’s history had to go through the construction industry before finding its rhythm.
